Of course its a question I'm sure many have asked. Its a strange name for a show, full stop when you think about it.
But heres my view on things. Kids at Ichigo's school, teased him, claimed his hair was bleached that colour. Why name a show that, for that reason, I dunno, but whats your opinion.

Can you bleach your hair carrot-top orange? Or even strawberry blonde?

There are a few things I noticed as well. White is considered pure and they purrify the hollows. Ichigo is the main character of Bleach, yet his bankai is solid black and his inner hollow is completely white. The masks of hollows are white, in contrast to their normally black boddies. None of these would dictate the name by them selves, but perhaps cumulatively?

I thought about this many times. and I'd have to go with this.
Bleach, the actual bleach not the show title, can make anything basically white or remove dark colors. Soul Reapers cleanse the hollows. So like bleach, they remove all the dark colors that don't belong in this world. That is my view point of it.

Ohh, Tort's not gonna like this.
Best explanation goes to ya, though.

Taken from Wikipedia talk page.
Apart from "there is no meaning/Reason" or "It has yet to be explained yet" this is probably the best theory I've heard. Fate's theory isn't bad either.
I'm sorry there is no lengthy Tort-rant on this, it's an area the TortHammer is not composed of as Kubo hasn't even hinted to a reason I can offer no solid stand poin t... any theory is as good as the next.
"Any theory is as good as the next? Well why my dear Tort what is your Theory?"
Errrm, shut up Dr.Watson... anyway I don't have a Theory the title isn't something I put much thought to and i was quite satisfied with the theories already out there. I may look into possibly meanings of the Kanji but that may be pointless as I think it's written in Katakana which is sounds without meanings (much like english, the symbols are there to make sounds. rather the Hiranga [sp?] which is the symbols have meaning in themselves and sometimes whole words are just one symbol!)
ブリーチ Bleach... or more precisely Burichi. Doesn't seem to have much meaning like I said I think it's Katakana (which they mainly use for spelling words they have taken from other languages) i suppose i could look up the meanings of ブ リ and チ but ー is ichi which as you know from the Official BH Language Guide means One! So yes I think it's phonetically spelt and i can't derive any hidden clues from there... but I'll do more research into it at a later date and see what I can come up with! (Because I kinda fell asleep at the computer after a tough day at work and woke up not long ago and really wanna get some proper sleep!)

Oh god. XD
1. Lil avii - if your hair is naturally very dark, then if you bleach it it'll most likely go ginger.
2. Lunar -
White is the colour of purity, and black is for darkness. Not for japan. In japan, white is the colour of "sorrow". Though I'm not sure about black. Therefore that cannot make sense...
------------------------------------
From what I heard, it is called Bleach because:
Bleach eliminates bacteria, dissolving them to wherever bacteria goes. Isn't this just like what the shinigami are doing? Eliminating the bacteria of the world, i.e hollows - even the dissolving part would work considering that hollow seemingly "evapourate" when purified.
After searching on japanese dictionaries... Bu Can mean: rate/percentage/category Buri can mean: style/manner ri can mean: an official/clever/advantage richi means: intellect chi can mean: blood/earth/thousand
I suppose if you consider those, then it may make sense...

Its the creator, he mentioned that he likes that kind of thing, where the good guys are evil-like and vice versa. I guess its that theme throughout the entire show, that gives it, its name then. Notice as well, how the Soul Society, suppose to be the good guys, are often criticized for their actions, such as killing all quincies and bounto. Plus the attempting to execute the vizards, treating them as hollow's. Personally, I'm expecting some shocking climax to the show eventually, like the shinigami actually being ended or taken over, something big like that.

From my experience in watching anime, usually if the title doesn't relate to something obvious then on one of the last episodes the bad guy goes on a rant about his actual goals and all that. Aizen will probably make a comment like "I will bleach this world clean of all I think is impure." Or something along those lines.

If you've got a HINT of ginger in your hair, it goes very bright orangy-yellow ^^ My hair's got a small, barely noticable hint of ginger in it(before Tort says no, LOOK AT MY FACE XD). Every time I've tried to bleach my hair, it always ends up looking slightly yellowy, even when I've gone to get it professionally done.

I think that the idea of Bleach being the "cleanser" for darkness has been stated enough so I won't reiterate the entire argument. Though it does seem like the most likely reason.
Some poking around and I found some interesting theories as well.
"Kaien's soul was bleached by Rukia's zanpaktou to be reborn as Ichigo."
"Rukia's clothes were bleached from black to white when Ichigo stole her power."
Some theorize that Tite Kubo is a huge Nirvana fan...hence the name Bleach (not exactly sure how this one works. They say a Nirvana album was called Bleach. Confirmation?) "it's true kubo liked nirvana, he admitted it."
Some even say that Kurosaki isn't his real name and that Bleach is his real name.
My favorite responses:
"The show's called Bleach because the manga is called Bleach."
"If I ever become a mangaka, I'm naming my manga something totally random, like Cup. That'll baffle my readers for years while they come up with these crazy theories."
Yahoo Answers:
Tite Kubo himself ( the creator of bleach ) gave two reasons to calling it that. One was a symbolic reason. As the soulreapers cleanse souls, it's like they are "bleaching" their souls. Like how bleaching in a clothes sense means to remove stains and blemishes, the shinigami remove sin and corruption from the souls. The other reason he gave is because "Bleach" was the name of his favorite Nirvana (thats right, kurt kobain nirvana) album.

Ok just to put the TortHammer on this post (and to show the TortHammer consists of more things than just Bleach!) I think that the idea of Bleach being the "cleanser" for darkness has been stated enough so I won't reiterate the entire argument. Though it does seem like the most likely reason. Yeah it works... Hence not having my own theory, however other theories work too! "Kaien's soul was bleached by Rukia's zanpaktou to be reborn as Ichigo." Incorrect. Kaien did not become Ichigo. I had that theory too before I saw the Huceo Mundo Arc. (the TortHammer was in development stages ok...Hell I'm only human I CAN be wrong sometimes!) Kaien's Soul did not return to the Cycle of life and death because of the screwed up things Aizen did to that Hollow, he ended up getting eaten by the 10th Espada. Thus his Ichigo cannot be the reincarnation of Kaien! I suppose you could argue that because he was killed with a Zanpakuto part of his Soul would have been purified and sent into the cycle even though most of his soul was entwined with the Hollow that reconstituted itself in Huceo Mundo only to be eaten by Aaroniero Arruruerie. "Rukia's clothes were bleached from black to white when Ichigo stole her power." While this does kinda work, it is technically incorrect! Her clothes were not bleached. For whatever reason her Hakama (big trousers in case ya didn't know) and Kosode (black over jacket of the Kimono) was removed just leaving the white Shitagi (undershirt of the kimono) Once upon a time Tort was a 13 year old Nirvana fan So yeah Bleach was Nirvana's first album. Some even say that Kurosaki isn't his real name and that Bleach is his real name. While we did discuss Isshin using a fake name hence none of the Soul Society recognising despite his father being Captain Level. I highly doubt his real surname is "Bleach" or even "Burichi". Western words for a Japanese surname... highly doubtful! My favorite responses: "The show's called Bleach because the manga is called Bleach." You gotta love the intelligence of some people really, this did make me laugh. "If I ever become a mangaka, I'm naming my manga something totally random, like Cup. That'll baffle my readers for years while they come up with these crazy theories." Hehe, yeah why the hell not! Yahoo Answers: Tite Kubo himself ( the creator of bleach ) gave two reasons to calling it that. Not sure how much you can trust Yahoo answers... I've heard many people -say- "Oh Kubo said this" or "Kubo said that" but not one of them can produce the interview where he said it. However if this is true it'd be kickass... Kubo a Nirvana fan who'da thunk it!

Well, I watched a documentary on pokemon,(yes I have a point in this so don't worry.) like I said, I watched a doc on one of the pokemon movies, 2003 I think, and when we(USA) were going to dub it to release it in theater here and make it in english and all that stuff, the plot and back story were changed from the Japaneses version to the USA version. the guys dubbing it and stuff repeatedly said that some of the stuff didn't add up or make sense to them. and when they called the guys who created the storyline it still didn't make sense. and what the guys said hit me hard. they said that the japaneses have a different outlook on the way ther view movies and stories. they don't need all these explanation and "why is this the way it is, why did this happen, what about this?" they don't think of movies that way but instead focus on the action, the fantasy, the thrill, and adventure in it all. not so much as if things add up or the storyline adds up perfectly. so in we(USA guys that dubbed it) had to make some changes and switch some of the scenes around as well add some things of their own to make it into the movies we're use to seeing over here.
Having said that, we may never know why Bleach is called, Bleach. maybe there isn't a REAL reason for it. its just something we might just have to accept like the japaneses do. They don't need reasons for such things, all they need is the action, the fantasy, and the thrill, and the adventure of it. Thats my other thought on the title.

actually that isn't 100% true. They have reasons for things (well mostly, we'll ignore things like Excel Saga for the moment, because that's just off the wall crazy!) but they want the audience to THINK about them rather than just hand an explaination to nice and simply spelled out on a silver platter!
Yes there are going to be cultural differences and I like to use anime to help me learn about them. Which is why I HATE it when official translators change it all so it "makes sense to the western audience" I'd actually prefere to be initially confused but learn about their culture than handed a bastardised hunk of crap!
But this is all a little off topic, but untill we can find an official source on Kubo's reasons I don't think we'll ever get a definate reason. I think the theories so far are good enough... but by all means keep adding more theories ^^ I wouldn't be surprised if Kubo reveals it in an interview (in Jump maybe) and it's nothing we've already mentioned... those crazy Japanese hehe ^^

Well, I did read that Ichigo was called Bleach as a nickname for his hair color. Other then that, I'm out of ideas.
