Chapter One
Beyond the red velvet curtain was a crowd of thousands, crammed into a wide courtyard with tall stone walls. Over those walls thousands more people choked the surrounding streets. Their cheers were so loud as to be uncomfortable, their smell a cocktail of food, alcohol and sweat that made him feel quite queasy. And they were all waiting to see one man.
Hercule stood behind him, grinning. Gohan wondered about that. He'd been uncannily (uncharacteristically) nice to him lately and he wondered why the world champion martial artist had taken such a sudden u-turn on his disapproval of he and Videl dating. Had the publicity of the last six months put him in such a good mood? Or was it a true acceptance of them and their feelings for one another? Gloomily, Gohan suspected the latter.
"Cheer up, son. Those people are out there to see you as much as me!"
"You know that's not true, sir," Gohan said dutifully.
"I kid you not, boy! Mark my words, the spotlight will be on you as much as me today. You and my daughter, of course." He turned and grabbed Videl in a crushing bearhug, one which she bore with a scowl. "Today is your day, kids! Now, I'm going to go out and warm them up for you. Be ready!"
Hercule strode out through the curtains and onto the balcony. A roar from the crowd shook the building, and a few seconds later the hero began his bellowing speech. Videl ignored him and stepped closer to Gohan.
"What do you think he meant by that?"
"By what?"
"He said 'today is your day, kids'. I think he's up to something."
"You really think so?"
"I know my dad. I can tell when he's lying." Videl pursed her lips against her fist. "But what could he be hiding?"
"I think you're just being paranoid, Videl."
"You do, do you?"
"Well," Gohan hesitated, then sealed his fate with true Son naivete, "yes. Listen to him, does he sound like he's planning anything as sinister as you say?"
They cocked their ears. Hercule's voice drifted back to them, slightly muffled through the drapes but clear enough to be understood. He talked of the hardships of the world and the strength of its people, the courage they'd shown fighting Buu and the celebration and pride they so rightly deserved for their part in his defeat. He urged them to party, to rejoice, and to turn their hearts to his daughter and her husband Son Gohan, who were soon to be married.
"See? Nothing to worry about," Gohan began, and froze, trembling, mouth wide.
Videl watched him curiously and prepared to ask him why he'd stopped when the information reached her brain too. Then she reacted in much the same way, her eyes widened, her mouth tightened into a straight, teethy grimace of horror, and her whole body went stiff. They looked at one another for support and found none, and settled instead on shouting the one word they could form in their suddenly dry mouths.
"Married?"
*
It had been six months since the warriors of earth had defeated Majin Buu, and life was gradually returning to normal. Celebration gave way to the usual schedule, the powerhouse economy driving on despite the mood as the world continued to work. For the Humans, Namekians and Saiyans actually involved in the battle the subsequent peace meant a long-deserved rest from conflict.
For two boys, however, the peace meant something very different.
Trunks was thigh-deep in toys, fishing through them with his hands. Though he'd been at it for ten minutes he had yet to come out with something to keep him entertained, and the search was beginning to wear on the demi-Saiyan's nerves. In one hand he held a teddy bear, in the other he held a rubix cube. The bear bounced and the cube shattered as they hit the wall behind him.
"I'm so bored!"
Goten's spiky head popped out of a mountain of toys. "So am I, but what is there to do, Trunks?"
"I dunno!"
"We could play hide and seek!" Goten suggested.
"Nah, you're no good at hiding your chi. I'd win easily."
"Nuh-uh."
"Uh-huh!"
"Nuh-uh!"
"Uh-huh!"
"Truunnnkss! You're only picking on me 'cos you're bored." The smaller boy sat down and folded his arms and legs, pouting. "Besides, I've been practising at home with my dad."
Trunks got up and threw himself on his bed. A white envelope fell to the floor, but he didn't see it or hear it hit the soft, thick carpet. Goten did, however, and he picked it up.
"What's this?"
"What's what?" The purple haired head rose from the pillow. "I dunno."
"It's a letter." Goten observed, turning it over. His eyes widened. "Trunks! It's addressed to us!"
"It is? Open it!"
The Son did so. Inside was a letter written in crude, childish writing.
"Hi Goten, hi Trunks, it's me, Gotenks." Goten paused. "It's from Gotenks? How is that possible?"
"I dunno," Trunks said, clearly unruffled by the origin of the letter. "Keep reading!"
"If you're reading this, then we beat that wimp Buu and everyone's okay. I imagine it's a lot of fun in your world."
"Shows what he knows," Trunks interrupted.
"I feel like i'm missing out. Can you two fuse so I can have some fun? I wanna live a little. See you later, Gotenks." Goten's scratchy voice subsided. He turned the paper over. "That's it. That's all there is."
"He wants us to fuse, huh? What do you think, Goten? Should we?"
"I dunno, Trunks. It is fun."
"Yeah!" he punched the air. "Besides, there's nothing else to do."
"Okay!"
The two boys leapt apart and levelled their chi. They lifted their hands, Goten's pointing right, Trunks's left, and performed the fusion dance. When their fingertips met they disappeared in light, the laws of the universe were subverted, and the two boys became one. Standing in the space they'd occupied was a single boy, wearing baggy white trousers, a black sash and a short black gillet with orange puffs at the collar and shoulders. Capsule Corporation shook at his power.
*
Vegeta, in the gravity room with Goku, stopped suddenly. Goku felt it too and stopped his punch, looking in the direction of Trunks's room. As involved as they'd been in their training it would have been impossible for them not to notice Gotenks's chi.
"Damn it Kakarrot, those kids fused again! I forbade them from doing that!"
"What're you gonna do, Vegeta?" Goku said with a shrug. "Beat them up?"
An evil light glinted in Vegeta's eyes and, grinning, he shot off. Realising what he'd done, Goku ran after him, determined to stop his best friend from killing their sons.
*
"Yes!"
Gotenks's voice was a blend of Trunks's aloof tone and Goten's pre-pubescent grate. His looks, too, were a curious mix of the two boys, taking Goten's deep black eyes and his short, powerful body and Trunks's sharp, handsome features. His hair was black except at the temples, where Trunks's purple-grey tint formed a frame of sorts to the strip of midnight-black hair.
"Yes! It worked! Gotenks has done it again!"
Grinning a wide, toothy grin, Gotenks flashed the victory sign at the door. That was when Vegeta ran in and skidded to a halt, confused. Goku, running full tilt after him, failed to notice in time that the smaller Saiyan had stopped and, as a result, ran full speed into his back. They ended up as a tangled mass of Saiyan on the floor. Gotenk's watched them, slightly embarrassed, as they fought themselves free.
"What do you think you're doing?" Vegeta shouted when he could finally stand. "Why did you fuse? There's no-one to fight! Why go through this idiocy?"
"Idiocy?" Gotenks asked, offended.
"Why in the world did you two fuse?" Goku asked, somewhat calmer than his friend. "Vegeta's right, there's no point, there's nothing to fight."
"No point? Gotenks has a plan!" he grinned at them. "I'm going to gather the dragonballs and wish to be alive!"
"WHAT?!?" The veins on Vegeta's temples popped up. "NO WAY!"
"Yes way!" Gotenks shouted, and framed his face with his fanned hands. "And you two won't stop me! Taiyo-ken!"
The room lit up like the face of the sun, and Vegeta and Goku, as fast as they were, were blinded before they could shield their eyes. Gotenks's laughter mocked them and died away as their vision slowly returned. When they could see again, the fusion was gone and just the two of them stood in Trunks's room.
"Damn it!" Vegeta cursed. "We've got to stop them! Him! Errr..."
"Why?" Goku asked, rubbing his eyes. "It'll wear off in half an hour or so."
"Think, idiot. What if they do get the dragonballs? What if they do ask to be permanent? Will they ever de-fuse? Will Goten and Trunks ever be individual kids again? Think for one damn minute about what'll happen to our sons!"
"You're right, we've gotta stop them!"
Goku's hand shot out and grabbed Vegeta by the shoulder. The index and middle finger of his other hand shot to his forehead and, closing his eyes to concentrate, Goku teleported them out of Capsule Corporation.
