What happens to a soul in soul society when it is killed?
I read somewhere that souls that die are reincarnated in the Human world. Fair do's. That's not what I'm asking. What I mean is, for example; when Shiba Kaien is killed by Rukia, it looks like his body is breaking into pieces.
Is this just because he's part-Hollow then?
And if it is because of that, what happens to a normal soul? Do you think they get buried? Or do they vanish? If they vanish, do they do so immediately, or slowly?
I'm not aware of any such information being made available in the manga or anime. This could be my memory failing me, but hey. So what are your thoughts?
Personally I reckon there'd have to be some kind of ceremony to send a soul back into the Human world...

several things have been stated. (especially if you've read TBTP)
They return to the Cycle.
But it has also been said that their bodies (and clothing) become spiritons and join with Soul Soceity.
Kaien is a bad example as Aizen really messed with that hollow and we find out Kaien hasn't returned to the cycle (or at least part of him was still part of that Hollow)
My personal opion, I reckon the process is slow enough for them to be able to have a funeral for the body. (For example Rukia and Renji's friends got graves which looked like they had space for a body buired under the mound that had been dug up)

I was going by the existence of graves too, for the most part. Cool. This means my (WIP) character bio for Kanisawa actually makes sense! Woohoo! Also; TBTP?

TBTP = Turn back the pendulum.
Worth a read; helps a lot to explain the Vizards situation...
As for the subject at hand; so far a lot of it is completely unexplanable. Same with the variations between age and growth of the characters. Until we discover it first hand from Tite Kubo, then everything is just theory right now.

The idea of the soul society was apparently to keep the balance between both worlds. I think that its possible to completely kill someone, but I think the general idea is that your reborn on earth.
There's a big theory that Kainen was re-born as Ichigo of course. Its plausible of course, but who knows.

I suggested Ichigo was a Kaien re-incarnated untill (as explained in another thread) the theory was shot down as Kaien didn't go back into the cycle as he was still one with the Hollow that possessed him as we find out in Huceo Mundo

This isn't what the topic is about, but it seems related. They have never said what happens to the souls eaten by a hollow after it is purified. If the hollow was a good person in life they go to Soul Society, but do its victims return to the cycle or are they destroyed when eaten.

I imagine if a Hollow is purified and sent to soul society that whoever they've eaten go there too. In Tort's example of Shiba Kaien I imagine he ends up back in The Cycle too, after Rukia kills that Aaroneiro Espada.

I think I found the way out of the cycle, Quincy. It was said that Quincy destroy the hollow, which throws off the balance between the two worlds.
Another thought I had about Arrancar. They aren't hollows anymore so what happens to them when killed by a zanpakuto? Are they purified or sent to hell like the other hollow? Could one of them have been a good person in life and be sent to soul society? Could a soul purified this way become a shinigami and would they remember their life as a hollow? Could that explain why a monster like Gin Ichimaru could become a shinigami and why Aizen had connections in Hueco Mundo before he revealed his betrayal? (This was my actual train of thought and it freaked me out how he could be logical.)
